Local curlers inspire

BISMARCK, N.D. – Team U.S.A. is taking home its first ever gold medal in curling. In Bismarck, the matches are motivated some future Olympic hopefuls.

It’s a match of sticks and stones, and with dreams of gold, residents in Bismarck are currently sliding to the queue.

“I began during the Olympics as well, people are only coming in because they watch it on television, you know, what’s it? How can this work? Is it as simple as it seems? Which it is not,” explained Sam Unruh, curler.

Unruh has been throwing stones since, and was motivated by the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

“It’s definitely a great deal harder than I seems. There is a Good Deal of balance involved, even after that, aside from the balance part of this the sweeping is a tremendous work out, you come out here and you’re sweeping up and back for 30 seconds for 2 1/2 hours,” said Unruh

The funding curling club has witnessed an influx of new folks.

“People have been very curious. We have had over 50 people in both Sunday night ‘Learn to Curls’, and we are going to have two more people know about curls, and we all anticipate them to be well appreciated, also,” said Roger Smith, mind curling instructor.

Unruh said, “We watch pretty much everyone of all ages and athletic abilities, but that’s the fantastic thing about curling, so anyone can try it”

Leagues toss Olympics throw 10.

“Well when they first get here, they just need to learn to bring clean shoes,” explained Smith.

“Its really fun, I make tons of new friends and also I enjoy playing sports,” said Lexie Donner, curler.

You might even find a few of those curlers on Olympic ice one day.

“Perhaps you have seen prospective Olympians? I may have seen future Olympians that I haven’t recognized. There might be potential Olympians in our children curl program,” explained Smith.
