Summer Manufacturing Camps Inspire

Summer Manufacturing Camps Inspire Parents and Students

The goal of having a camp in every state appears more achievable as 65 camps took place across the U.S. summer time. Countless students toured local businesses, learned how to utilize new tools, and made take-home jobs with all the skills they honed during camp. Becoming more students involved with manufacturing procedures and getting hands-on experiences are only two of the goals for students at summer camps.

Parents want their kids to have fun while learning. Students wish to use equipment they have never used before. Camp teachers wish to teach students how a manufacturing career can sense, and show them what it can look like. And camp supervisors not only want the whole procedure to run smoothly, but they enlist area businesses to give tours and seek out financial aid to maintain the camps moving. It is a huge order to fill, but community colleges and technical colleges are stepping up to the plate and hitting it from the park.

Post-camp notice from a pupil:

My Lady and I are forever grateful for all of the things we did in the robotics camp. I heard something valuable every day. I think I’ll be strongly considering a career in manufacturing/engineering because of you. Thank you!
(Hillsborough Community College (Brandon), Tampa, Fla.)

Feedback from father of 12-year-old twin boys:

They wouldn’t quit talking about it! They had been up early, every morningthey couldn’t wait for here!
(Robots, Machines & Making Things, Manatee Technical College, Bradenton, Fla.)

Here’s what camp supervisors had to say about camp experiences…

This type of camp is needed in every community where manufacturing is among the largest businesses. Middle school age boys and women should be introduced into the advanced manufacturing sector. We hope attitudes and mindsets will change about advanced manufacturing within our region. Hopefully, the students that are in our camp will choose jobs in the manufacturing field where there is a high demand. Be determined to implement a similar camp within your community and partner with a local college and local producers. It takes a excellent group to pull it off. It is a valuable workforce improvement tool.
(Itawamba Community College, Belden, Miss.)

The camp may have been a bit too successful–many students said that they wanted to stop school to enroll in welding in MTC. 1 student stated, ‘I must experience things I never would have otherwise’.”
(Manatee Technical College, Bradenton Fla.)

We love working with students and seeing their creative ‘mild’ turn on, then watching them learn to check at things differently. Seeing how a product goes from an idea to merchandise (and all of the steps in between) and seeing that the students find it out on their own. I am delighted to mention that the amount of females attending our manufacturing camps doubled from 2015 to 2016, and we grew that amount by another 38 percent this summer (from 4 to 8 to 11).”
(Ranken Technical College, St Louis, Mo.)

We’d three unexpected successes of this program: a pupil who decided to dual enroll in the school after the camp; the app was featured from Lake County Economic Development as a component of the Summer of Tech marketing; LSSC will sponsor a regional robotics contest in the autumn semester. ” (Lake-Sumter State College, Leesburg, Fla..)

What an wonderful experience for the youth within our community! Our neighborhood manufacturing partners have realized the necessity to build an excellent work force by reaching out to place students. The students who are attending the summer camps are exposed to a business that remains a mystery to most in the community. These students can see that manufacturing is safe, and clean, and can lead to a fantastic livelihood.
(Zane State College, Cambridge, Ohio)

You can help to get a camp began in your region. All it takes is the willingness to maintain a summer camp and an application from the perspective community college or technical school. Share this link using a school that you know has a schedule in metal fabrication, welding, manufacturing technology technology, store facilities, or a comparable program.

Programs are due by Dec. 1.
