DJ Batiste is a part of a different gang these days.
Batiste is a former gang leader turned into a speaker who stresses the value of parents and teachers working together to improve children’s lives. He spoke Tuesday night at Snipes Academy in Wilmington.
“A lot of times, we do one thing at college, then (students) go home to a culture shock, or else they might even do one thing at home, then visit college to a culture shock,” Batiste said. “We wish to do where we’re on exactly the same page, using some of the exact words, instructing some of the exact things, where it’s more of a transition from college to house.”
One teacher helped flip Batiste’s life around after years of trouble, leading a gang and such as detention.
That teacher, Donna Porter, introduced Batiste and he was on the path to helping others and himself after Batiste began educating it.
In accordance with Batiste, aware discipline is the tradition of being able to observe the very best in others and keeping composure, adhering to the belief that “the moment is as it is” without letting a scenario to overwhelm us.
For helping nurture his transformation Batiste imputed his grandma and Porter.
“There were times when my grandma might have given up on me and she did not. She remained loyal,” Batiste said. “There were times when Mrs. P might have given up on me. . .but she decided not to, so if anything, the message for the parents would be never to give up, but a message for those teachers is never to stop trying.”
