Working vacation

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Rickie Fowler requires his last five months “a little of an off-season.”

It’s fitting, then, that Fowler will start his 2017-’18 year with a bit of a working holiday at this week’s OHL Classic at Mayakoba, where he is the highest-ranked player in the area (10) and possibly the most anticipated first-timer in the event’s 11-year run.

“I mean, I’m excited to be down here,” said Fowler, who together with his own girlfriend, Allison Stokke, obtained to the Riviera Maya on Saturday for a few pre-tournament fun in the sun. “I want to play nicely and I feel as though I certainly can play nicely. I would not be here if I didn’t believe I could triumph. But I’m also enjoying the comfort and getting any time in the gym and we’ll definitely be prepared to go and really get the season going in January.”

About TOUR, the off-season is where you will locate it, and while Fowler was occupied since he beat Emiliano Grillo 4 and 6 in the Presidents Cup on Oct. 1, then he still hasn’t been playing with golf.

Fowler served as Grand Marshal at alma mater Oklahoma State’s homecoming; went to Stokke’s homecoming at Cal-Berkeley; did a wine-tasting tour in the fire-ravaged Napa Valley; shot TV spots for Farmers Insurance in Los Angeles; swung through Scottsdale, Arizona; and squeezed in five rounds of golfclubs Oh, last week and he delivered video of his swing, his coach, Butch Harmon. (Harmon said it looked great if marginally laid off the top, according to Fowler.)

It looked almost rude inquire how Fowler could play this week and to disrupt the relaxed Riviera Maya vibe. “I like the golf course,” he said of the 7,000-yard, par-71 El Camaleon Golf Club. “it is an enjoyable design. I like playing in windy conditions; I am aware that it can get quite windy down here.”

Another thing he discovered in his first trip around the course Wednesday: It’s not too forgiving off the tee. “You’ve got to hit the ball fairly straight to stay out of the native place, anything you wish to take action,” Fowler said. “Stay out of it.”

In the large picture, 28, Fowler, is currently performing nicely, with space for improvement. In 32 key starts none of them wins. He led the U.S. Open at Erin Hills after shooting a 7-under 65 in the first round, but awakened to some T5 finish. (He’s never broken level in the final round in eight U.S. Open appearances.) He picked up his fourth career win at The Honda Classic, but had nine.

In 1 sense, Fowler states, last year was “arguably the very greatest I have played.” That is 1 way of looking at it. He also admits he had “maybe less wins as I would have enjoyed.”

He also keeps hanging around when they win, to congratulate his buddies. Jordan Spieth at the Open Championship. Justin Thomas at the PGA Championship. Spieth has said that when Fowler himself wins, a world of friends will be waiting behind the green for him. That is not karma; it speaks to Fowler’s likability.

His W is forthcoming with destiny giving a nudge if form holds. Fowler won THE PLAYERS Championship in 2015 after a survey in Sports Illustrated tagged him as overrated. And while his critics said he was too nice, pointing to each of those halved matches in the tense theater of the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup, he went a sporty 3-0-1 at the Presidents Cup. He appears likely to find out the personalities.

“it is a fine line,” Fowler said Wednesday. “You know well enough, viewing men and where they complete and how they play and understanding how much one putt or one shot can do, whether it’s coming down the stretch or even that 1 putt early in the week.”

In search of his first major and also Patrick Reed, who’s also producing his first OHL beginning, echoed Fowler’s sentiments.

“Nowadays the PGA TOUR is indeed profound, top to bottom,” Reed explained.

Whatever occurs in the lush, leafy El Camaleon this week, ” Fowler will devote some time in the home in Jupiter, Fla., until begins at the Hero World Challenge, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, along with the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Jan. 4-7. That’s the Riviera Maya to Maui to the Bahamas.

“Not a bad little swing,” Fowler said.

You can bet he will make the most of it.
