TORONTO — BlackBerry Ltd.. Said on Wednesday it’s developed new software for running sophisticated computer systems on vehicles, providing the once dominant smartphone manufacturer up a leg in a burgeoning segment of the technology market.
The company declined to name any automakers who plan to utilize the technology, but senior BlackBerry executive John Wall said “multiple” car companies have begun integrating it in onboard computer systems of vehicles that are currently in development.
BlackBerry touted this product, the QNX Hypervisor 2.0, as a way to produce vehicles more protected from hacking, stating it can isolate many systems to operate on one piece of silicon, allowing them to isolate functions critical to safety from systems that are exposed to wireless networks.
“Think of a house, and a burglar getting into a space. Thus, even when the burglar does get in that area, the door remains secured, he can’t get out of that space. And even though he could get in the hallway, the other rooms have been secured,” Wall, ” the mind of BlackBerry’s QNX branch said in a teleconference with reporters.
QNX has a solid place in the marketplace for internet-connected automobile infotainment systems, and is currently seeking to improve revenue.
The automotive industry is just one of those fastest-growing parts of the technology marketplace, as race want to construct automobiles and finally to include attributes that are more autonomous.
Qualcomm Inc. said the new hypervisor is compatible with its Snapdragon 820Am automotive processor, enabling carmakers to reduce hardware complexity and prices from putting multiple systems on one platform.
BlackBerry shares were little affected in morning trade. They have soared about 63 percent on hopes for sales increase since March from QNX and relatively new goods.
