Data & Society expects an ambitious full-time Senior Designer / Art Director to direct the design of our in-house study products, digital assets, and site. This job would suit a talented and craft-focused interactive and print designer having 8-10 years’ experience in the industry. The role provides fresh source material–and important freedom to exercise a creative voice.

Society & Data is a dynamic nonprofit with strong brand recognition with influencers in policy sectors, instructional, and the tech. Its function on the social consequences of data-centric and automated technology is featured in major outlets such as WIRED, the New York Times, Washington Post, VICE, Wall Street Journal, and CNN.

Even the Senior Designer / Art Director can induce, develop, and promote a culture of visual layout at Data & Society. They refine will message, extent, present, and execute design theories for new study releases. Most importantly, they’ll be a brand winner who translates, interprets and expands product our brand, and design guidelines into audience adventures–including and particularly via the Data & Society site.

The programmer work out of our New York City office and will report to the Director of Communications. They’ll work to hone record and whitepaper formats targeting decision-makers in policy industry the tech industry, and the general public. They will have the support of a Communications Production Manager in ensuring timely project scoping, resourcing, and delivery; on the design side, this includes recruiting and managing reliable third-party collaborators: programmers, other musicians, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers, and more. They will additionally have the support of a Media Programmer & Producer in making UX developments and transitioning legacy digital assets to new brand standards. On account of the direction nature of this role, the designer should be skilled in lateral communication cross-disciplinary facilitation, and design team management.

They’re expected to routinely present theories, wireframes, and mock-ups to senior management during project kick-off stages, as well as articulate their strategic design intention to researchers during comments cycles. The Communications team at Society & Data prizes the capacity to nimbly and outstanding time management–and humorously–adapt to changing circumstance.

  • Over the first 90 days: A package of new research products which illuminate urgent issues in emerging technologies, each with its very own bold identity that harmonizes with the Data & Society brand;

  • an extremely productive, harmonized, and happy group of design collaborators.
  • A strong portfolio which demonstrates your graphic design believing and core craft skills across an assortment of customer categories and layout formats and formats, e.g., brand identity systems, printing, illustration, digital interface layout for responsive sites and applications;
  • 8-10 years’ experience, together with at least 2 years of experience managing professional employees;
  • Solid formal academic background, including BFA in Graphic Design, Digital Media Design, Communication Design, or commensurate work experience; advanced degree a plus;
  • Fluency with common design applications (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch) for its production of visual layout artifacts and presentations;
  • Eloquent verbal/written communication and presentation abilities, together with the capability to articulate design theories to your group and your customer;
  • Strong ability to think visually and collaborate with Interaction Designers since it pertains to interaction, behavior, and design discussions;
  • Strong ability to think technically and collaborate effortlessly with Technologists as it pertains to understanding the advantages, possibilities, and constraints of common programming platforms and languages; actual programming experience a plus;
  • Ability to recruit talent, offer performance reviews, and help resource allocation choices,
  • Powerful time management skills to balance project schedule with fast-paced deadlines, and
  • Enthusiasm for your digital design industry & technology at large.
  • This isn’t a distant position. You must work complete time in the Data & Society New York City office.
