Actor Doctor for Wrongful Death, Bill Paxton Family Sues Hospital

Bill Paxton’s household has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Los Angeles hospital before he died, and the surgeon that conducted the celebrity heart surgery.

The suit filed Friday from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center alleges that the surgeon, used a “high risk and unconventional surgical strategy” which was unnecessary and that he lacked the expertise to perform, and that he downplayed the procedure’s risks.

And it said the hospital knew the surgeon, Dr. Ali Khoynezhad, tended to “participate in maverick operations and show suboptimal judgment.”

The treatment induced Paxton to endure cardiogenic shock, bleeding and a coronary artery disease that is compromised, the suit alleges.

Paxton’s death certificate states he died Feb. 25, 2017, by a stroke, 11 days after operation to replace a heart valve and then repair aorta damage. He was 61.

“Bill Paxton and his household trusted the doctors and staff in this medical facility but rather Cedars-Sinai betrayed their trust,” the family’s attorney Bruce Broillet stated in a statement. “The physician’s actions resulted in this tragic and preventable death.”

Children, James and Lydia, and Paxton’s widow, Louise, attracted the litigation. It seeks unspecified damages and reserves the right to include more defendants who work for the hospital because titles and their roles become clear.

Cedars-Sinai stated it could not provide opinion about Paxton’s case.

“State and national privacy laws prevent us from agreeing about patient care without written authorization,” an announcement said. “Nothing is more important to Cedars-Sinai compared to health and security of our patients. These remain priorities. Among the explanations for our premium quality would be that we examine concerns . This method ensures that we are able to continue to deliver the highest quality care.”

Khoynezhad has left Cedars-Sinai for another hospital. An off-the-shelf message left seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned.

The suit comes just ahead of the first anniversary of the passing of Paxton, that played with major supporting roles in the movies “Apollo 13,” “Titanic,” and “Aliens,” and starred in the HBO series “Big Love.”

Paxton, who had been born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, was one of the industry’s busiest actors, with nearly 100 credits, and was starring in the CBS drama “Training Day” if he died.
