Inspirational Vietnam cardinal moves closer to sainthood

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has moved into Vietnamese cardinal imprisoned for more than 13 years from the communists a step closer to sainthood.

Francis on Thursday signed a decree saying a life of virtue lived. It is the first barrier before Thuan could be beatified.

Thuan’s accounts of being imprisoned by the communist leaders of Vietnam made him an inspirational figure to a lot of Vietnamese Catholics. He died Rome in 2002 of cancer, in which he had been forced to live in exile for the last years of his life.

Thuan was arrested in solitary confinement for more than 13 decades, starting in 1975.

The initial step toward canonization, a miracle attributed to Thuan’s intercession for him to be beatified must be certified by the Vatican.
