April 12 (UPI) — The National Osteoporosis Society, or NOS, in England reports in a new study which it found an alarming dieting fad among teenagers and young adults.
Researchers report they found 70 percent of 18- to 35-year-olds have already been or are dieting, and that 20 percent had cut out of their diet, or substantially reduced, dairy consumption — a source of calcium required for bone growth and strength.
“Diet in early adulthood is so significant because from the time we enter our late twenties it is too late to reverse damage caused by poor diet and nutrient deficiencies and the chance to construct strong bones has now passed,” Susan Lanham-New, clinical adviser to the NOS and professor of nutrition at the University of Surrey, stated in a media release.
Researchers discovered that the most common diet among individuals age 25 or older in England is an “healthful eating” dietthat consists of cutting out entire food groups altogether.
The analysis found that individuals under age 25 were much more likely to be after diet, health or nutrition writers on societal media more than any other age category. Researchers warn concerning the influence of fad dieting regimes promoted on social media and the effect they have on adolescents and young adults and their wellbeing.
Researchers said for developing osteoporosis later in life, cutting out entire food groups during early adulthood, when the bases of good bone health are constructed, could significantly improve risk.
Osteoporosis affects half of all girls and one in five men over the age of 50, causing bones to become brittle and break easily.
“Without urgent action being used to invite young adults to integrate all food groups into their diets and avoid particular ‘clean eating’ regimes, we are facing a future where broken bones will turn out to be just hte standard,” Lanham-New explained. “We all know that osteoporosis is a painful and debilitating condition and young adults have just 1 opportunity to construct strong bones and reduce their risk of creating severe problems in later life.”
