The UK’s Telegraph newspaper printed an intriguing report a week, the upshot of that was that Germans laugh really little. One in three Germans laughs less than five times each day. If they do allow a nod to themselves, ” writes the Telegraph, it is more probable than not to be with 77 per cent [of Germans] saying they desired to laugh at others’ misfortune. The Telegraph points out also that the Germans invented the concept of schadenfreude. As stated by the New York Times, the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl once said that Germans were reluctant to laugh which they’d hide from the cellar. The Times related Kohl’s remark at a 2005 bit on the establishment of German laughter colleges, in which Germans learn to induce themselves to laugh–automatically–to be able to alleviate stress.
