Trieste’s Italian seaside city, significantly less than one hour in Venice, is quiet, safe and beautiful. It is also pleasingly near the borders of Slovenia and Austria, across the Adriatic from Croatia and readily enough to the Alps for a day’s skiing. The weather in spring and summer is sunny and warm, although a ferocious wind, the Bora blows through in winter.
