4 LA Fitness gym-goers contract Legionnaire’s disease in Florida

Tony Smith stated he has been going to LA Fitness for at least a year, and now he is worried about getting ill.

“That sort of annoys me. My health is a top priority,” he explained. “They’re constantly running out of soap, and they don’t have proper paper towels so that you can wash your hands.”

Health inspectors found conditions were favorable for the germs and moved on Friday and about Orange Blossom Trail in Hunter’s Creek to the areas on Kirkman Road at Orange County. Officials stated the outbreaks occurred at the place in late May and the Hunter’s Creek place in February or late May.

The spas at both places and showers were using a solution, officials stated. The fungal infection may spread when someone inhales peppermint.

The outbreak of this week marks the next LA Fitness place in the region which was found to have beneficial conditions for the illness. The Florida Department of Health confirmed three cases of the illness.

1 girl said her husband got ill recently. She stated she believes it occurred after he used the fitness center.

“He’s 37 years old — quite healthy man, not had any type of disease,” Malinda Capi stated. “For him to spontaneously get pneumonia and work out here daily …”

Previously, the disease was found on Conway Road and Michigan Street at the LA Fitness at 2008 and at the Waterford Lakes place in 2010.

Legionnaires’ disease is spread from the Legionella bacteria, which, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can multiply and grow in various sections of a building’s water system.

News of the Florida cases comes across the nation on the heels of numerous outbreaks. The bacteria which causes   Legionnaires’ was found at a nyc police precinct where an officer was hospitalized with symptoms of the illness. Last week, the Southern Nevada Health District announced that it is currently investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ in guests that stayed separately at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The CDC stated the bacteria grows best in hot water and can lead to headaches, shortness of breath, cough, muscular aches, fever and symptoms. Symptoms can show up as much as 10 days following exposure.

The CDC said individuals with people that have a weakened immune system, or even the highest risk are 50 years or older.

“He’s constantly drinking water out of the faucet here,” Capi said of her husband. “They did not construct the facilities properly, or something isn’t perfect.”

The Florida Department of Health stated those places have to be treated, and also showers and showers will be closed until further notice.

“I’ve never observed any indications of any illness or germs that they found,” Smith stated. “They ought to at least notify the members.”

WKMG  achieved to LA Fitness about the germs claims, but has not heard back.
