Fire-eating minor league manager a motivational genius

Mike Pinto knows how to fire up a crowd.

Pinto, director of the individual Southern Illinois Miners, functions just like a motivational speaker throughout the winter. He travels from city to city inspiring small business people, sometimes in front of audiences as large as 5,000 at corporate conventions.

To demonstrate the audience how to confront its own anxieties, Pinto ignites a stick, then puts it into his mouth. You may see for yourself at the one-minute mark of the video:

Twice a year, Pinto asks players to eat fire in a group meeting. “You get these players that are real macho and all of a sudden that fire gets about six inches from their face and they start to feel the heat, they are not always so brave at that moment,” Pinto says with a laugh.

This fire-eating supervisor isn’t on the seat. Pinto has the greatest winning percentage at Frontier League history and his Miners have reached the playoffs in six of their last seven seasons.

Tim Hagerty is the broadcaster for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas, and also is on Twitter at @MinorsTeamNames. He is also the writer of “Root for the Home Team: Minor League Baseball’s Most Off-the-Wall Team Names.”
