NEW YORK: A doctor who lost his job in a new york hospital opened fire with an assault rifle in the building on Friday, killing another doctor and wounding six others before taking his own life in a burst of evident workplace-related violence, officials said.
The gunman, wearing a medical laboratory coat, stalked two floors from the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, also apparently attempted to put himself on fire, officials said. Police found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound since they hunted the building, ” he stated.
Six other people were wounded including one who had been shot in the leg, along with 1 doctor was taken to death, Police Commissioner James O’Neill stated at a press conference.
“One doctor is dead and there are several other people who are fighting for their own lives right now,” Mayor Bill de Blasio informed reporters.
O’Neill said the gunman was armed with the “assault rifle.”
Even the mayor characterised the shooting as an “isolated incident” that seemed to be “workplace-related,” saying the gunman has been a former worker of the hospital. He said investigators had ruled out terrorism.
Neither the mayor nor authorities identified the suspect or any of the victims.
However, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz told WABC News in an interview which the hospital had, fired the gunman, Dr Henry Bello. Press reports described Bello.
WNBC tv in New York reported he’d resigned in the hospital in 2015 to prevent termination.
Details about the carnage were cynical. Authorities said when the gunman moved a shooting rampage on the floors of the 24, the rampage unfolded shortly before 3pm.
Adding to the pandemonium was a ordeal that he set, triggering fire alarms which halted elevator service in the hospital, even hampering attempts by first responders to reach victims and to evacuate the building.
Robert Maldonado, 1 ambulance worker, told WCBS tv that he and his spouse were forced to carry a bleeding patient down eight flights of stairs to safety, using pressure to the wound of the man on down the road.
“Even in the midst of his horror, there have been many, many acts of heroism,” de Blasio said. “All of the employees at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital, whose day went from regular to dreadful in a matter of moments – the doctors the nurses, all the personnel, responded with outstanding bravery, trendy professionalism. They protected each other. They secure their patients.”
Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north west of Yankee Stadium, describes itself as the greatest voluntary, non-profit healthcare system serving the South and Central Bronx, in addition to among the biggest providers of outpatient providers in New York City.
