Egypt: Senior Muslim Brotherhood leader killed in shootout

AL QAHIRA – Egypt’s safety forces killed another person in the Islamist group within an overnight shoot out at a Cairo flat and a Muslim Brotherhood leader, the Interior Ministry stated Tuesday.

A ministry statement taken by the state MENA news agency stated 6 1-year old Mohammed Kamal, a doctor by occupation, was killed along with Yasser Shahata Ali Ragab within an exchange of gun fire as authorities attempted to detain the two evening.

However a Brotherhood statement posted on its web site just after reviews of the shoot out surfaced stated authorities had detained Kamal, indicating after being taken in to detention, he was killed.

In July 2015, the Brotherhood formed the same claim when security forces raided a flat in a Cairo suburb that was western, stating nine of its own members were killed after they were rounded-up. Authorities said at that time the nine were equipped and were meeting to program assaults in the flat.

Kamal was needed for his part in over a dozen assaults that were armed, the ministry stated. He was sentenced to life in jail for creating armed groups in absentia as well as for an explosion near a police station in the city of Assiut. He directed several armed divisions of the Brotherhood, the declaration mentioned.

Kamal was likewise needed for organizing the June 2015 killing in Cairo of Egypt prosecutor, Hisham Barakat — the initial assassination of a leading official in 25 years. The authorities had previously implicated the militant group, accusing it of instruction in the Gaza Strip people who carried out the assassination. Hamas h AS denied the accusation.

The declaration also said Kamal was behind the unsuccessful assassination of Egypt mufti in August in Cairo. A lesser-identified militant group claimed responsibility for this assault.
